Working in Shadows – a lip reading challenge in film collections

Our Wessex Film and Sound Archive was lucky enough to secure funding from the British Film Institute to support the delivery of ‘Working in Shadows’. A collection of films produced in the 1940s by Elliotts of Newbury, a manufacturing firm whose work turned to the war effort from 1939 onwards, have been brought to life following an appeal to help identify some of the workers seen on screen. Now the films are being shared in public for the first time in over 75 years. Deciphering what was being said in some silent clips, with groups of employees laughing and joking as they pose for the movie camera, proved quite a challenge, as volunteer Jan reveals in this blog.
