Roadworks on Kennington Road in Ashford due to start later this month

Kent County Council is to widen Kennington Road in Ashford.

It will be done in the Longport Bridge area between the junction with Blackwall Road North and the Julie Rose Stadium.

The road narrows creating a localised pinch point affecting traffic flows in the area.

It will be necessary to close part of Kennington Road in both directions between the junction with Blackwall Road North and the factories for approximately 11 weeks.

Works are planned to start from Tuesday, June 20 with an anticipated finish by Sunday, September 3.

KCC Cabinet Member for Highways Matthew Balfour said: “I appreciate this will cause disruption and for that I apologise.

“These works will remove a potential safety issue as well as improving traffic flows in Ashford.

“I’d ask residents to bear with us while these works are carried out and ultimately lead to a better road for Ashford drivers.”

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works, as will road access for residents and visitors.

There will be no direct access between Junction 10 Willesborough Interchange and Spearpoint Corner during these works.

The alternative route will be clearly signposted.

The works will generally be between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and 7am and 3pm on Saturdays.

Access to the remainder of A2070 Kennington Road will continue from either direction up to where the road is closed, but there will be no through access.

Due to the nature of the works, it will not be possible to re-open the road outside the working hours.

During the works there will be an alternative exit from the William Harvey Hospital and so a temporary mandatory speed limit of 30mph will be imposed on The Street, Willesborough and Hinxhill Road, Brook/Wye.

This applies in both directions from the existing 30mph signs near the junction with Kennington Road to the vicinity of Ousley Farm.
