Residents encouraged to take part in the Medway Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Medway Council is encouraging residents of all ages to sign up to this year’s Medway Summer Reading Challenge.

The Medway Summer Reading Challenge encourages four to 12-year-olds to borrow and read six library books during the summer holidays. The theme for the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge is Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved children’s title Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.

As children read library books for the challenge, they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells, which they can add to a treasure map. Young readers will use the map to help Dennis, Gnasher and friends solve clues and discover a hidden treasure chest full of pranks.

To take part in Mischief Makers, children can sign up at their nearest library. To celebrate this year’s theme, Medway’s libraries will be hosting a wide range of events throughout the summer.

Medway Council is also encouraging teenagers and adults to read this summer. The Teen Reading challenge encourages 13 to 16-year-olds to read six books during the summer holidays. The Rewarding Reading challenge is open to residents aged 16 and above. Those who read six books over the summer will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a range of prizes included a gym membership, books and more.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said:

“I would encourage residents of all ages to visit their local library and take part in the Summer Reading Challenge 2018. Medway. Not only is reading fun, it’s also very important. Our libraries and community hubs offer a variety of services and play and important role within the local community. We look forward to welcoming residents to our libraries this summer.”

Sue Wilkinson, CEO of The Reading Agency said:

“At The Reading Agency, we believe that everything changes when we read and we know from our research how much fun families and children have when taking part in the Challenge. Mischief Makers offers intergenerational appeal and we hope this family friendly, accessible theme will inspire more children than ever to read over the holidays and make use of their local library throughout the summer and beyond.”
