Medway Council is encouraging residents to keep recycling ahead of Recycling Week next week.

The council is supporting WRAP’s (Waste Resource Action Programme) campaign which runs from Monday, 21 September, to Sunday, 27 September.

Medway’s weekly household waste and recycling collections have continued throughout the coronavirus pandemic, with crews collecting 21 per cent more recycling, between 23 March and 5 July, compared with the same period last year due to more people being at home. Despite other councils stopping their garden waste collections, Medway’s crews continued to collect waste, recycling and brown bins.

To mark Recycling Week 2020 Rochester Castle, Rochester Cathedral and The Brook Theatre will be switching their lights green on Monday, 21 September.

Recycling Roadshows will also be held at Dockside Shopping Centre on Monday, 21 September and at the Pentagon Shopping Centre on Wednesday, 23 September. Residents will be able to pick up free reusable recycling bags, caddy bins and buy compostable caddy liners (£2 for 26 liners).

To encourage residents to keep recycling caddy liners will be buy one get one free during recycling week at the roadshows and at Medway’s libraries.

The council’s recycling team also works with schools across Medway to set up recycling initiatives to encourage pupils to recycle in school and at home.

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Frontline Services, said: “I would like to thank residents for continuing to recycle, it’s great news that residents are now recycling more than ever before. I would also like to thank our waste collection crews for their continued hard work, especially during the pandemic. It is incredibly important that we all continue to dispose of our waste responsibly to protect our local environment and help keep Medway clean and green.”

The Medway Recycles twitter account will also be sharing handy recycling tips throughout the week, follow @MedwayRecycles on Twitter.
