RECYCLING: We all know how to recycle plastic bottles and cardboard, but sometimes it’s difficult to know what items to place in which container. Items such as food waste, nappies, plastic toys and textiles, mistakenly placed in the recycling bin can cause issues during the recycling process.

Save time this bank holiday

Recycling centres across Essex will be busy during the upcoming bank holiday. But why not save yourself time by considering an alternative?

Can your items be donated to a furniture project or online via the free platform Freegle? Items can be given away and you don’t need to leave the comfort of your own home. Alternatively, make the most of what you can recycle by using your kerbside collection?

 

Re-Cycle your bicycle

Re-Cycle Bikes to Africa is a small charity based in Colchester who receives pre-loved bikes. Each bike is inspected, prepped and then sent out to rural communities in Africa. Any that are deemed unsuitable will be stripped down for spare parts and recycled. They also raise funds and since January 2019 they have sent over 7,000 bikes to Africa.

So if you live in the Colchester area why not save the environment and support a worthwhile cause?

 

Basildon flood scheme shortlisted for awards

A recent Essex County Council flood alleviation scheme, SPONGE 2020, has been shortlisted for two major awards, the Floods Visionary Award and the Climate Resilience Project of the Year.

The scheme, delivered at Basildon Hospital, involved the redevelopment of two courtyards with sustainable drainage systems and water gardens to reduce flood risk and make the area more appealing to visitors and patients.
