Positive parking on the agenda in Hampshire

Hampshire County Council has signed up to the Positive Parking Agenda, a national initiative between local authorities and the British Parking Association which works to promote best practice in the parking sector.

The move comes as the County Council puts in place plans to modernise the way on-street parking is managed across Hampshire to ensure a consistent and equitable operation throughout the county and protect highways maintenance budgets for essential repairs.

Councillor Rob Humby, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “Good parking plays an important part in a strong local economy in our towns and business areas; and it  shares principles with some of the themes that have emerged through evidence we have heard through our Hampshire 2050 work into how we can ensure Hampshire’s continued prosperity in the future.  Hampshire residents and businesses are concerned about how we move around in our daily business and the impact this has on our economy, environment and local infrastructure.”

The Positive Parking Agenda works to gain recognition for parking management as a valued service and significant contributor to a better, safer, more accessible and sustainable environment.

Councillor Humby added: “Well managed parking can have a positive impact on the local economy, reduce congestion and in turn improve air quality. Increasing the availability of on-street parking provision has the potential to reduce the time and distance travelled by drivers searching for a suitable and convenient place to park, and by harnessing technology to make parking options more flexible and straightforward, we can improve access to high-demand parking spaces and deliver a more effective service.”
