Plans hotting up for Rochester Fire Station’s open day

Final preparations are in place for Rochester fire station’s open day this Saturday (8 September) which promises to be a fun-filled day out for all the family.

The event, which is free to attend, runs from 10.30am to 4pm, will have a packed programme of displays and activities.

A focal point of the event will be a hazard room display. Families will be invited to spot potential fire safety hazards in a specially created domestic scene. Later in the day crews will hold a fire demonstration, which will highlight how quickly a fire can take hold and the importance of having a fire escape plan.

Families will be able to pick up some valuable fire safety tips and find out more about the free safe and well visits and other services Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) provides.

All visitors can take part in free basic life-support and first-aid sessions throughout the day, including guidance on how to use a public access defibrillator and tips about treating, and avoiding, burns and scolds.

Little ones will be able to climb aboard fire engines and have a go at squirting water at miniature ‘wooden fire houses’. There will be a range of firefighting equipment on display including an animal rescue unit and a height vehicle.

There will also be a display of vintage fire engines and historic fire gear from the Kent Firefighting Museum.

Older children (aged 14 years and over) will have access to the Road Safety Experience auditorium for a special presentation on road safety and will be invited to carry out a crash investigation.

Rochester fire station watch manager Darryl Spicer said: “We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to our open day, which showcase the work of Kent Fire and Rescue Service and our partners, and provide lots of safety tips.

“It promises to be a memorable day and there will plenty for all the family to see and do, and people will take away some valuable advice to help keep their loved-ones safe from fire and other emergencies.”

The event is being supported by a wide range of partner agencies, with representatives from HM Coastguard, Medway community safety unit (CSU), KCC Trading Standards, Medway Council Youth Services and Medway NHS Foundation Trust all attending.

There will also be stands from local Alzheimer’s and Dementia support services.

Refreshments, including hot drinks, cake, ice cream and burgers will be available.
