PC Stephen Howard honoured at Police Bravery Awards

safety warning

Stephen Howard was stabbed after confronting a group of men who were trying to break into a house and has now been nominated for an award at the 23rd Police Bravery Awards.

PC Stephen Howard received his nomination after he saw six men climb over a fence into the garden of a house in Gravesend on Saturday 14 January 2017.

Excruciating pain

Despite being off duty and outnumbered, PC Howard crossed the road to challenge the group. Most of them ran off but he managed to restrain one. Another man repeatedly punched him in the face, but despite being attacked he continued to restrain him. He then felt an excruciating pain in his leg, causing him to release his grip and the two men ran off.

PC Howard had been stabbed in his right thigh with such force the blade went through his leg and out the other side.

Selfless actions

His selfless actions directly led to the arrest and conviction of these violent offenders, who each received substantial prison sentences.

Chief Constable Alan Pughsley said: “I would like to pay tribute to all the police officers recognised at this ceremony but of course it fills me with great pride specifically to see PC Howard recognised for his outstanding bravery and professionalism in tackling this violent group. He placed himself in danger to prevent crime and protect the public all whilst off duty.

“He sustained an horrific injury but was eager to return to work as quickly as possible and I am delighted to have welcomed PC Howard back to operational duties.

“PC Howard went above and beyond the call of duty and I am incredibly proud to call him a Kent Police Officer.”

The awards, held by the Police Federation of England and Wales, honour and recognise police officers who performed outstanding acts of bravery while on or off duty.
