Reading Ideas

Book of the month

Our Book of the Month for March is Lynda La Plante’s gripping novel, Widows. Harry Rawlins has been masterminding robberies for 20 years, but when the hijack of a security van goes wrong, Harry and his team are killed. Harry’s widow, Dolly, now has a choice. Does she hand over Harry’s ledgers or does she take over her husband’s business?

In Search of a New Life

From leaving in despair to arriving in hope and struggling to build a new life; the human stories behind migration are the theme of this month’s booklist.

A love of reading is for everyone

One in six people in the UK find reading difficult whilst others struggle to find the concentration to read a whole book, and some just don’t have the time.  For that reason, The Reading Agency has worked with some brilliant bestselling authors to produce six bitesize books called Quick Reads.

Top authors, such as Adam Kay (the doctor who wrote the smash hit This is Going to Hurt) and JoJo Moyes (author of Me Before You) are amongst the writers who have written short books that are quick and easy to read.

The whole range is available at every Essex library and mobile library. Try a Quick Read today or tell someone you think might like to discover (or rediscover) the joy of reading.

Take part in our book amnesty this month

Spread the word with family and friends that from throughout March, Essex libraries are holding a book amnesty. Return forgotten library books to your local Essex library or mobile library without paying late charges. You can also replace lost library cards free of charge too!

It’s not just about books though, any library item can be returned as part of the book amnesty.

This opportunity will help Essex residents to start using their library service again and rediscover how much we have to offer.

So, search behind sofas, explore under beds and rummage through bookshelves and let’s see how many library books we can return this March!

March is festival month

The Essex Book Festival is underway and the first few events have already taken place. The festival was launched in great style by bestselling crime writer Val McDermid at Anglia Ruskin University last Friday. Many authors are already sold out but at the time of going to press there are still tickets available for some events. These include; Jess Kidd at Chelmsford Library on 25 March and Susannah Constantine at South Woodham Ferrers Library on 18 March. If you’ve never been to an Essex Book Festival event before, make this the year you try one!

This year the festival is delighted to be playing its part in Essex 2020, a year long, county-wide celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It’s going to be a great year of science and creativity filled with exciting events such as Tree-Mend-Us, a tree inspired day in Chelmsford Civic Theatre on Sunday 8 March.
