City Lives

It’s hard to hold on to your dreams living in the centre of a large city. This selection of gritty books set in an urban environment feature young people dealing with modern inner city life.

British Food Fortnight

Food Fortnight will be taking place between 21 September and 6 October. It’s the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink. If you feel inspired by all the great produce and national dishes then borrow a book from our Celebrating British Food booklist and get cooking.

A chance to see one of Britain’s most popular poets

We’re delighted to welcome award-winning poet and presenter of BBC’s Poetry Extra, Daljit Nagra to Chelmsford Library on Saturday 28 September. Daljit will be reading from his poetry which is described as an energetic shot of espresso.

Daljit will also be exploring “What is truth?”, to tie in with the theme of this year’s National Poetry Day. The event is free but booking is required.

Space Chase

The Summer Reading Challenge is over for another year. The theme was Space Chase to tie in with 50 years since the moon landings. We’re thrilled that thousands of children took part this year and enjoyed reading throughout the holidays! All the children who completed the challenge and read all six books received a medal and certificate.

Research shows that taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge can help children keep up their reading skills during the long summer holiday and prevent the “reading dip” which teachers notice at the beginning of the September term.

Library Ambassadors Wanted

Do you know a creative, friendly, persuasive young person aged 13-18 who would like to do some volunteering?  We’re currently recruiting Library Ambassadors for this academic year, 2019/20, to help us promote library services to their friends and peers, through school or other social activities.  Peer promotion is a great way to reach young people who wouldn’t think to look at our website or social media channels.

Our Library Ambassadors will receive five emails, spread across the academic year, about specific library services to promote. This can be as simple as chatting to their friends or creating a poster to display in school. It’s a great way for young people to add skills and experience to their CV.

Anyone interested can apply online now.

Access to Research

Did you know that there’s a brilliant resource available for students and researchers?

Access to Research gives free access to over 15 million academic articles in participating public libraries across the UK and Essex Libraries is one of them! Leading publishers have made their journal content available free for the benefit of research. Start now by viewing which articles and journals are available from home, then view the full text at one of our libraries.

Parents, we need your feedback!
