Newhaven says ‘yes’ to Neighbourhood Plan

Residents in Newhaven have given their Neighbourhood Plan the thumbs-up after 83% of voters supported the key planning document.

Neighbourhood Plans give residents a much bigger say in the shape of future development within their community and access to significantly increased levels of funding for local projects.

In the referendum on October 10, 1105 people voted in favour of the neighbourhood plan and 192 against.

Councillor Emily O’Brien, Cabinet Member for Planning, said:

“Neighbourhood Plans put planning powers in the hands of local residents.

“With this positive vote, the Neighbourhood Plan will sit alongside the Lewes District Council Local Plan, meaning that all future planning applications that relate to Newhaven must be decided in accordance with both documents.”

Once the plan is formally adopted by Lewes District Council and the South Downs National Park Authority – part of Newhaven is within the national park – Newhaven Town Council will receive a higher proportion of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).

Councillor O’Brien added:

“This is good news on a number of fronts for Newhaven.

“From a planning perspective, the town now exercises much more control over development and in terms of local infrastructure, the Newhaven share of CIL funding is set to increase.”
