New walking and cycle route helps Whitehill and Bordon towards green and healthy status

A new shared cycle and footway scheme will soon be in place in Whitehill and Bordon thanks to Hampshire County Council.

The £2 million project was approved by Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, and it will be funded from the EM3 Local Enterprise Partnership and developer contributions.

Councillor Humby said: “This scheme is part of a range of travel and transport improvements to support the successful regeneration of Whitehill and Bordon which will integrate new developments with the existing town and are designed to encourage people to walk and cycle more.
“Once complete, it will provide improved walking and cycling access north to south through Bordon and through the new town centre development area.  In time, these improvements will also connect to a wider network of upgraded cycle and walking routes thanks to our successful funding bid to the EM3 Local Enterprise Partnership and close partnership working with East Hampshire District Council. This includes improvements the County Council is making for pedestrians and cyclists at Budds Lane, Ennerdale Road and Woolmer Way.”

The scheme will provide:

• The narrowing of the C114 (formerly the A325) carriageway along the west-side kerb line to deliver speed management benefits, reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and provide the necessary extra width for a shared-use path on the west side;
• New crossing points over the C114 between the existing centre on the eastern side of the town and the new facilities being delivered as part of the regeneration on the western side;
• Improved surfacing of existing areas of C114 carriageway and footway, along with renewals and improvements to the highway drainage system;
• A connection with the new town centre development site at Arrival Square;
• A reduction in the north-bound approach to the Chalet Hill traffic signals to one lane to promote a change in the function and character of the road through the town centre and reduce the dominance of traffic on the C114 by encouraging north-south traffic to use the new Relief Road.

The work is likely to start in the summer and be completed by the autumn.
