An outdoor gym for adults and young people aged 14 and over has been officially opened in Radnor Park, Folkestone.

The new facilities include gym rings, high bars, plyometric step boxes, and easy fixing points for TRX strength bands. There is also a skier, an inclusive handbike, and a sit-up bench.

It has been designed to cater for people of all abilities and encourage residents to get more active free of charge. So whether you’re a fitness fanatic or an absolute novice, there is something for you.

A launch event held on Friday was attended by Leader of Folkestone & Hythe District Council (F&HDC) Cllr David Monk, and Cabinet Member for Property Management and Grounds Maintenance Cllr John Collier.

F&HDC Chairman Cllr Ann Berry and county councillor Dick Pascoe also joined supporters of the project at the opening.

Cllr John Collier said: “A lot of people have already made use of the outdoor fitness zone, and it’s great to see residents and visitors taking advantage of the brilliant facilities.

“The gym caters for different ability levels, and the equipment has easy-to-understand instructions for those who may be unfamiliar with such kit.

“Not only does it add to the already fantastic offering here at Radnor Park, it also expands on the range of healthy outdoor activities people can enjoy in the district.”

The Radnor Park Community Group raised funds for the project, and further funding was provided through Kent County Council. Cllrs Ann Berry and Dick Pascoe also contributed significant funds through Environmental Improvement Grants and ward councillor grants.

Special materials help protect the outdoor fitness zone from the effects of bad weather – meaning it can be used more frequently throughout the year.

A new wheelchair swing was installed earlier this summer to ensure more people can enjoy the facilities at Radnor Park – which was awarded a prestigious Green Flag for the second successive year in 2019.
