New high-tech Solar-powered bins to keep coastal park cleaner

Solar-powered bins that compact rubbish so they can take up to eight times more litter are on order for the Lower Leas Coastal Park.

Councillors approved the purchase of the new high-tech bins at a meeting of Folkestone & Hythe District Council on Wednesday 18th July 2018. They were told the Solar-powered bins have a built-in sensor to constantly monitor how full it is, and send a message to the council’s control centre before it needs emptying.

This means staff can spend their time more productively, emptying bins that are almost full rather than going to half-empty bins.

The bins will be installed in the Coastal Park as part of a major drive to tackle problems with litter including overflowing bins and bags of rubbish left nearby.

Cllr Stuart Peall, Cabinet Member for the Environment explains:

These truly are the Rolls Royce of bins. They use the latest technology and will help us keep the Coastal Park looking neat and tidy during the busy summer season.
The larger capacity will prove very useful as getting vehicles through the crowded park to empty the bins can sometimes be a problem.
This can lead to overflowing bins, which should be avoided in future because these new bins hold so much more litter.

If the bins prove to be a success, as they have elsewhere, they could be installed in other prime locations across the district. While the bin itself costs more than a standard litter bin, the ongoing costs are expected to be about the same as emptying and maintaining the ordinary bins, but with the added benefit of keeping the surrounding area cleaner.
