National Siblings Day

On 10th April 2019 it will be National Siblings Day.  This date was chosen by the founder of the day, Claudia Evart who, tragically, lost both her brother and sister at young ages.  The date in question marks Claudia’s late sister, Lisette’s birthday.

Having been created in 1997, it was recognised and gained non-profit status in 1999.  With its roots beginning in the United States of America, it has now spread to Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, our very own United Kingdom and many, many more countries throughout the world.

National Siblings Day is a day to recognise and honour our brothers and sisters and the special bond that’s shared between them that’s like no other.  It can be celebrated however you wish, whether you go out for dinner, go for a drink, or even just spending time together.  If that’s not possible, why not speak to your brother and/or sister on the phone, or go through old photo albums, sparking your memories of times gone by and have a nostalgia session.  There are so many ways to celebrate the joy of siblings!

It goes without saying that we will all have wildly different perspectives on having siblings.  Personally, I am one of three boys in our family and I also have the joy (I think) of being the youngest.  In our household growing up, of course there was some arguing (it goes with the territory), but there was always that underlying feeling that we all loved each other, even if at times unspoken, it was definitely there.

My brothers and I are close, we always have been and always will be.  One of them now lives in Canada and the other in London, but we still all talk (nearly) every day.  The bond between us is untouchable and it’ll never be broken.  We will be unable to get together in person on National Siblings Day, but I can guarantee we’ll talk and share happy times together via the wonderful technology we all now have at our fingertips.  Reminiscing with my brothers is one of my favourite things to do.

Perhaps you’ve not spoken with your sibling for a while.  On 10th April, you could see this as an opportunity to reconnect even if you just send a message to them on Facebook to ask how they are, it can be a small gesture, but could go a long way.

So let’s celebrate our siblings and all the good things they do for us.  From my own experience, of course brothers/sisters can be annoying, but that’s all part of the fun growing up!  Now all adults, my brothers and I are as close as we ever were, if not closer.
