Motorists urged to buckle up as part of road safety campaign

Kent Police officers will be supporting a new Europe-wide road safety campaign.

The TISPOL (European Traffic Police Network) seatbelt enforcement action, as part of the road safety campaign, takes place between the 12th & 18 March.
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit will be paying particular attention to those who have failed to secure their seatbelts and issuing them with either advice or a ticket.

Sergeant Grant Steele of the Roads Policing Unit said: ‘As much as this is business as usual for us, we welcome any opportunity to promote road safety messages. Kent officers will be briefed to be on the lookout for motorists and passengers who are not wearing a seatbelt.

‘Seatbelts reduce the risk of death in the event of a collision by around 50%, they restrain the strongest part of the human body, keeping people within the vehicle and they spread out any force from the collision. They help the body to slow down on impact and protect the spinal cord. Despite all this we still come across people who just do not put their seatbelt on.  It is particularly shocking that there are parents who allow their children to travel without them too.

‘I would like to ask drivers to take this opportunity to make themselves aware of the importance of wearing a seatbelt and take responsibility for anyone travelling in their car to ensure they are in use.

‘Life lost on the roads is a tragic waste and we all have a duty to make sure we have done everything in our power to drive safely.’
