Mother’s Day 2019

As I’m sure you’re all well aware, it is Mothering Sunday (commonly known as Mother’s Day) this weekend.  It’s a time to celebrate all the things our mothers’ do for us and to give the one each of us calls ‘Mum’ (in any capacity) a day that’s purely for them and to express our love and gratefulness.

Traditionally (certainly in our household, growing up), common gifts for Mother’s Day over the years have included; Bottles of wine, flowers, chocolate, perfume, bracelets, necklaces, makeup (we never bought makeup however, growing up as one of three brothers, we wouldn’t have known what we were doing in that department..), ornamental pieces, and more.  Whilst activities on the day could include; a nice family meal at Mum’s favourite restaurant, a pub visit, a cinema trip, or simply just enjoying time together at home, or going for a long walk.

But what if, this year, you wanted to step away from the ‘traditional’?  We’ve put together some gift suggestions and ideas for day trips that don’t necessarily conform to the ‘norm’.  Why not treat your Mum to something a bit different?

Nontraditional Gift Ideas

An Online Music Subscription

Nowadays, with CDs nearly a thing of the past, if she hasn’t already got one, why not treat your Mum to a subscription of your favourite online music service?  Be it Spotify, Deezer, iTunes, or whichever one you choose.  We’re suggesting ‘your favourite’ so you can get an account set up and once you reveal the present, you can then teach your Mum how to use it and load it with all her favourite tunes!

Introduce a New Activity/Class

Has your Mum ever expressed an interest in a new hobby but never been 100% sure which specific route she might like to go down?  You could treat her to a few ‘taster’ lessons of a specific activity or class to give her a push, such as; yoga, dancing, singing, martial arts, pottery, painting, the list could go on and on.  Of course, there is the potential she could go to one class and dislike the activity you’ve chosen, but on the other side of the coin, she may LOVE what you picked and have a new hobby for life.

A Musical Instrument

Now, we’re not suggesting you buy your Mum an instrument out of the blue when she’s never expressed a single desire to learn/play one.  This is more an idea for those who know their Mum would be very interested in learning an instrument, but has simply never got round to it – this could be just the encouragement she needs; whether she wants to be the next Joni Mitchell, or the next Carole King.

Personalised Gifts

There are probably plenty of people out there who would do this anyway, but if not, this is definitely a fantastic idea to consider and something that always feels that little bit extra special.  Even if you are on a tight budget, something small (such as a mug, glass, or picture frame) with a lovely personalised quote or message on it can mean so much more than something hugely expensive which holds no sentimental value.

Nontraditional Activity Ideas

Go Karting

Depending on the type of person your Mother is, it may be something to consider.  If you think she’d enjoy it, why not treat your Mum to a day of Go Karting?  Not only would it be a great day out for all your family to enjoy, you can be almost certain it’ll be a BIG surprise!

Vineyard Tour and Tasting Experience

Here you could mix the traditional with the nontraditional.  As a gift, buy a beautiful bottle of wine and for the main event, book your Mum on a vineyard tour.  If this is something you think she may be interested in, you can find and book your day, here and tours take place up and down the country, so no one should be too far from one.

Sporting Event

Of course, it’s self-explanatory that if your Mum isn’t a sports fan, probably don’t take her to see any sport.  But, if she is.. then why not!  It doesn’t have to be on the day, but if your Mother likes athletics, football, rugby, hockey, golf, or any sport for that matter, buy the tickets for an event she’d favour and wrap them up.  With this idea, there is the added bonus that once Mother’s Day has been and gone, the event will still be something to look forward to.

Boat Trip

This one is weather dependent, but certainly something out of the ordinary.  Hire a boat, spend the day on the river, lake or in the sea, relax and share your presents with your Mum whilst out in the open, calming, fresh air.  Sounds like bliss, doesn’t it?  Being in England, and given the time of year, we know this could be a bit risky, but if you don’t want to take the risk, book it for a few months time when the weather is a bit more reliable!

Whatever you are doing this Sunday, be sure to spend quality time with your Mother and take the chance to show her your appreciation.

From all of us here at CommunityAd, have a very Happy Mother’s Day.
