A modern mix of library facilities for New Milton

Programming robots with young people was all in a day’s work for Councillor Seán Woodward, the County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, this week, as he unveiled new facilities at New Milton Library.

Joining in with coding activities at the library’s popular ‘Makery’ session, Councillor Woodward said: “This kind of activity brings people together and inspires learning – which is what libraries are all about. We want everyone in the New Milton community to come and enjoy the library, whatever their age or interest – which is why we’ve invested in improving access to the most popular books, and providing a range of modern facilities and technology, for customers of all ages.”

The library now has dedicated community rooms and an improved layout, thanks to a £87,000 refurbishment by Hampshire County Council.

The children’s library has been relocated to the ground floor so that those with buggies can manoeuvre more easily. Popular adult fiction is now on the ground floor, along with more popular adult non-fiction, enabling quick and easy access, including for people in wheelchairs or with limited mobility.

A full redecoration, updated facilities, and additional spaces which can be hired out, complete the new look.

Councillor Woodward added: “New Milton Library is truly a place for all the community to go and enjoy.”

Alongside the traditional book borrowing and free WIFI, there’s a range of activities to attend such as Knit and Knatter, Rhymetime and Storytime.

For children in particular, there is:

• Fun, brick building sessions with the Construction Club
• Writing code and programming robots with iPads in the Makery sessions
• The Summer Reading Challenge which runs until 15 September.
