Meet our Mother’s Day hero: The rower turned lifesaver

Lifesaver, Lorraine Galvin is a Lifeboat Helm at Wexford Lifeboat Station. She’s in charge of the inshore lifeboat during launching, at sea and during recovery, as well as being responsible for the safety of the crew on board.

She was only 17 when she capsized into icy seas from her rowing boat – and was stranded for 2½ hours.

Today, Lorraine is a college lecturer, RNLI lifeboat helm and mum to 8-year-old Lauren who is growing up within the lifeboat family.

‘I bring my daughter with me to the station every evening. When my pager goes off, she says: “We have to hurry mummy, someone’s in trouble!”’.

The community project making a lifesaving difference

Picture the scene: You’re the breadwinner for your family – they rely on you to survive – and it’s time to go to work. Your home, and every home in the village, is surrounded by open ponds and deep rivers which are always flooding.

We’re committed to ending global drowning. That’s why we’re implementing Creches for Bangladesh – a project run by local women – in a country where drowning claims the lives of 40 children every day.

Two young mothers share their experiences of how the project is keeping their young children safe from the risk of drowning – and how you can be a part of it.
