Medway residents are invited to enjoy a series of free family events this year to share their memories of how their local areas have changed as part of Medway Council’s Medway 20 celebrations.

2018 marks 20 years since the founding of Medway and four new local free family festival days are being held across Medway this year to celebrate community identities.

Since 1998, Medway has transformed and seen many huge improvements. Not only does it now boast the biggest regeneration zone within the Thames Gateway, but Medway is surrounded by award winning rural areas and rich heritage.

The Focus On events are designed for local people and will highlight all that is great about each area.

Fun for all the family

The first Focus On festival will be held in Cozenton Park, Bloors Lane, Rainham, on Saturday, 19 May, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. There will be plenty of activities for people of all ages to enjoy.

There will be a horticultural fair where visitors can browse a range of plants, flowers and ornaments but if you prefer roller-blades, scooters, skateboards and BMXs Team Extreme will be putting on displays with coaching sessions and competitions.

There will be pig racing, face painting, a climbing wall, dancers as well as a stage and live music performances.

The Royal wedding will also be live streamed on a screen for visitors to watch.

Future Focus On events will be held at Hook Meadow Recreation Ground, Walderslade, on Saturday, 1 September, Northcote Recreation Ground, Strood, on Saturday, 15 September and at High Halstow Recreation Ground, High Halstow, on Saturday 22 September.

‘We look forward to welcoming residents’

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “These Focus On events will highlight all that is great about the local area. 2018 is an important year for Medway and I would encourage residents to come along and share their memories of how their local areas have changed. There will be plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy and we look forward to welcoming residents to the Focus On events.”
