Medway proud to continue its links with Japan

Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Medway Council was pleased to welcome the Mayor of Yokosuka Mr Katsuaki Kamiji and the Chairman of Yokosuka City Council, Mr Kenji Kinoshita, to Medway from Japan, this week.

The Mayor of Medway, Cllr Steve Iles, welcomed the Mayor of Yokosuka, Japan, Mr Kamiji, and the Chairman of Yokosuka City Council, Mr Kinoshita, and their wives, to the Guildhall Museum on Thursday, 28 June. The Mayors of Medway and Yokosuka signed a new twinning certificate, to continue the friendly partnership between the two areas.

On Friday, 29 June, Medway Council also welcomed the visitors to Gun Wharf for a meeting with Leader of the council, Cllr Alan Jarrett.

Medway is proud of its links to Japan, each year thousands of residents attend the Will Adams Festival in Gillingham Park which celebrates the life of the Elizabethan adventurer and Japanese culture.

Cllr Alan Jarrett, said: “Medway is proud of its links with Japan and we are pleased that we have renewed our partnership agreement with Yokosuka, and that Medway will remained twinned with the city.

“The visit was a great opportunity to further develop Medway’s relationship and business links with Japan. Medway is already home to a number of Japanese businesses and it would be fantastic to see more. Medway is home to more than 14,000 businesses, with more moving to the area and we would be delighted to welcome more international trade.”
