Medway Libraries – Read a spooky book
Read a spooky BOOOOOook
The Halloween season is nearly upon us. With the crisp autumn chill in the air, get cosy and settle down with your favourite hot drink – it’s the perfect time to read a spine-chilling book. From dark fairy tales to spooky mysteries. There’s lots of not-so-scary books for the little ones too!
Here’s a few of our recommendations:
Youngsters
Famous ghost stories from Europe – Matt Chandler
People of Europe are no stranger to ghost stories, but some terrifying tales have stood the test of time. Visit the Akershus Fortress in Norway, where a dog ghost guards the gates of the former prison.
Spooky school : a Halloween book for mini monsters – Sam Lloyd
Welcome to Spooky School! It’s the scariest school around, where all the creepiest creatures come to dust off their skills and become the best they can be.
Teens
The last of the spirits – Chris Priestley
Sam and Lizzie are freezing and hungry on the streets of Victorian London. When Sam asks a wealthy man for some coins, he is rudely turned away. Months of struggle suddenly find their focus, and Sam resolves to kill the man.
James Patterson brings the fifth and final book in the ‘Witch & Wizard’ saga to a head by exposing the nature of power – and what it means for the heroes that have it.
Halloween, 1861. A special train with two carriages steams across the Lake District at night on its way to a place notorious for its record of supernatural incidents. Most of those on board have been fortified by alcohol so the mood is boisterous.
Midsummer’s Eve, 1648, and England is in the grip of civil war between renegade King and rebellious Parliament. Alinor, a descendant of wise women, crushed by poverty and superstition, waits in the graveyard under the full moon for a ghost who will declare her free from her abusive husband.

International Games Week – Get ahead of the game!
“Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen how gaming has allowed people to connect with each other in an otherwise isolating situation,” says GamesRT President Jessica Parij.
International Games Week takes place next month. It’s an initiative to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games. Games can be online, on paper, on boards – with friends, with family, with loved ones or someone you’ve just met.
Libraries connect you with game ideas and game books, to help you get started and improve your strategies. You can even connect with other gamers using our public computers (but remember to book).
Take a peek at our collection of game books on Medway.spydus.co.uk and during Games Week look out for online links to games on our Medway Libraries Facebook page.
