Medway Archives Centre Newsletter – Another year of discover ahead

Come along and discover for yourself the wealth of documents, photographs, maps, records and knowledge relating to the Medway area that are held at MAC. Whether you’re researching your ancestry, discovering the history of your home, or want to know more about Medway’s past we can help.

Everyone is welcome to come and browse, or have a chat with the team who will be delighted to help you. You can also book an appointment for a private view of one of our collections. Or why not attend one of our informative talks, special events or exhibitions?

We have a wide range of events, talks and exhibitions planned for next year, so put the dates in your diary and enjoy an informative and relaxing hour or two delving into Medway’s past. In the mean time we would like to wish all of our customers a very merry Christmas and a happy year of discovery ahead.

Don’t worry if you’re unable to visit us, you can even search the Archives from home via our website.


Exhibition: Watt’s Charity in Medway

It’s the final few weeks of our exhibition looking at the history and estates of the Watt’s Charity their property holdings, and the background history to many of the buildings that they owned, and some that they still own.

Runs until 14 January


Exhibition: Picture Medway

Come along and take a look at the photographic work created by talented young people of Medway as part of the Picture Medway Project.

Teenagers from across the area have taken the time to capture their perspective of Medway and what the area means to them.

Their photographs have been brought together in one exhibition.

Runs from 16 January until 18 February at MAC (on display at Gillingham library 14 Dec – 11 Jan)

Exhibition: Pembroke

A Pictorial Journey from Naval Barracks to University Campus, is a visual history of Pembroke using photographs from the Local Studies Collections, and is just a tantalising taster of the many images we have.

Runs from 20 – 25 February

Exhibition: Women Power

A special exhibition celebrating group action, education and comradeship, featuring material held in our archives and with contributions from local Soroptimists, Women’s Institutes and Girl Guides.

See how these organisations have shaped and enhanced the lives of local women and how they have helped to record life in Medway’s towns and villages in the last 100 years.

Runs from 2 March until 19 May

Talk: Women Power

Put the date in your diary and look out for more details in the New Year. To tie in with International Women’s Day, we will host a special event linked to our Women Power exhibition.
