Mayor hails first ever walking netball tournament ‘a great success’

Dozens of women donned their trainers to take part in Eastbourne’s first ever walking netball tournament in aid of the Mayor’s two chosen charities.

Ten teams participated in the Sport Eastbourne event at Eastbourne Sports Park, raising £539 to be split between WayfinderWoman and Memory Lane.

WayfinderWoman is a charity that helps women build better lives by working on their self-confidence and skills, and Memory Lane raises money to help people with dementia, as well as their carers.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Gill Mattock, said: “A big thank you to everyone who took part, the day was a great success. Thank you also to those from Eastbourne Netball League who volunteered to umpire and help out with the tournament. The money will go to two very worthwhile local charities.”

The Mayor coerced friends and work colleagues to help make up her team, most of whom hadn’t played netball for over 50 years. “Fortunately walking netball is a slower version of the game I remember but it was still very competitive,” she added.

Her team, The Suffergettes (not a spelling mistake), had great fun and walked away with the wooden spoon.
