Learn Traditional Building Skills and Building Conservation at Hatfield House

Anyone with an interest in historic building conservation and traditional building skills can learn new skills at the magnificent Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

Conveniently situated just 21 miles north of London, Hatfield House is a fine Jacobean house and garden in a spectacular countryside setting. It boasts stately architecture and enchanting landscaped gardens and is the ideal setting for learners to practise their newly acquired conservation skills.

The courses, which are run by Place Services, are open to delegates with or without previous experience and are led by highly- skilled experts in their fields.

Courses include:
Historic Building Surveying: Laser Scanning, 16-17 May 2019
Focusing on historic interiors, delegates will use laser scanning to provide a measured survey and recording of the Chapel, Winter Dining Room and Library at Hatfield House.

Bats and Buildings, 30 May 2019
Learn how to carry out a preliminary bat roost assessment of buildings, and gain some practical experience using the buildings on the Hatfield Estate. No previous experience of bats necessary.

Lime Plaster for Beginners, 5 July 2019 
A one-day course aimed at owners of historic buildings who want to tackle small patch repairs to their homes and those with no prior experience.

Lime and Conservation Brickwork, 26-28 June 2019
Ideal for working bricklayers or historic homeowners, delegates will learn the correct repair of historic brickwork and use of lime mortar. This course will take place in the wonderful setting of the 17th Century kitchen garden of Hatfield House.

Timber Frame Repairs – 4-6 September 2019 
Learn traditional timber frame repairs at the 17th Century barn and former stables at Brewhouse Farm on the Hatfield House Estate. This course is suitable for those with or without experience in timber frame repairs as the repair work can be tailored to all students’ requirements.
