Last chance to enjoy Artwave

Following the fantastic bank holiday turn-out, the final weekend of Artwave is set to end on a high with an array of events and exhibitions to welcome visitors.

Thousands of people have already enjoyed the festival which runs across three weekends from 17 August to 1 September, and this weekend offers the final chance to follow the trail of 140 free exhibitions across Lewes, Seaford, Newhaven and the surrounding villages.

Exhibitions are held in various venues from artists’ homes and studios to churches, pubs and even the cable hut at Cuckmere Haven.

Artwave is a great opportunity to support creatives and shop local, while giving people the chance to meet the makers and learn about their practice. Visit exhibitions in a wide variety of mediums, by a mixture of emerging and professional artists and makers.

Rural Trail:

• Explore Glynde including a group show at Glynde Place (venue 16), stone carving by Jacky Misson (venue 17), bespoke footwear by Thomas Murphy Shoemaker (venue 18) and contemporary art at MUD (venue 20).
• Contemporary stone sculpture by Royal Society of Sculpture artist Guy Stevens (venue 11).
• Artwave regular Art & Soul in Falmer showing work in this picturesque Sussex village (venue 29).

Haven Trail:

• Last chance to see marine art and paintings of local scenes from the Newhaven Historical Society’s reserve collection (venue 52).
• Relax and enjoy the sculpture and home cooked food in the garden at South Heighton Pottery (venue 56).

Seaford Trail:

• Black and white photography by Tony Gaitskell exhibited alongside writing that the images have inspired (venue 62).
• New for this year, see contemporary art and craft by 5 artists on show close to the National Park (venue 71).

Lewes Trail:

• So much to see at Paddock Studios, including Paddock artists annual exhibitions (venue 79), fine artist Peter Messer’s studio (venue 80), and drawings of the body by Michael Munday (venue 81).
• First collaborative exhibition by Lewes Women in Business members at Westgate Chapel (venue 104).
• Go behind the scenes at Sun Studios open for one weekend only (venue 93).
• Free family workshop with The Amazing Art Cart at Lewes Depot on 31 August. The Amazing Art Cart is a mobile, versatile art station offering creative workshops for all ages.
