A retained firefighter from Shoreham Fire Station will embark along a seafront trek to Brighton Palace Pier carrying a 13.5 metre ladder to help raise money to allow his mother to complete her bucket list having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

David Mayfield, who serves as a wholetime firefighter with London Fire Brigade on Green Watch at Norbury Fire Station, as well as serving his home community at Shoreham as a retained (on-call) firefighter will embark on the trek from Shoreham to Brighton on Saturday 26 September. He will be joined by colleagues from London Fire Brigade as well as West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service who will help him carry the 100kg ladder along the 10-mile route.

He will be raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity as well as his mum Debby Mayfield’s bucket list.

David said: “As you can imagine, mum’s diagnosis has broken the hearts of everybody who knows and loves her. We have been told that she has between three and six months left with us, so we want her to do all the things she wants to do during the upcoming weeks.

“In Mum’s style, she has been laughing and joking and kept her chin up throughout these horrible few weeks and is a true inspiration to both me and my sister. We are incredibly proud to call our beautiful mum. She is currently working on a bucket list of things she would like to do. So far, the list includes things like an afternoon tea out and getting her first tattoo!

“We hope that we are able to raise a decent amount of money to allow her to make all her dreams come true.

“But equally we are very keen to support The Fire Fighters Charity as well. This is a cause close to many people’s hearts – they provide such a vital service to both serving and former firefighters and their families. It is important that their work is able to continue.”

David will be setting off from Shoreham Fire Station at 11am on Saturday 26 September they will be walking to Brighton via Southwick Square, Boundary Road, George Street and the seafront and are aiming to be at the pier by 3pm.
