Kids filled with wonder at Summer of Science

Chelmsford Museum opened the doors to Sandford Mill on Friday 27 July for the start of its ‘Summer of Science’.

The new event programme is a massive success so far, with children, parents and carers pouring through the historic building’s doors. Visitors were wowed by crazy science experiments, interactive learning and acres of space for children to let off steam!

This summer, Chelmsford Museum will be running a series of Summer of Science events at Sandford Mill each Friday (morning and afternoon sessions) throughout the school holidays. Last Friday, kids were ‘edutained’ by a bird of prey display, bug hunts, fossil discovery with Essex Rocks and Mad Science experiments from Dr Dude.

Dave Finkle, Museum Business Manager, says:

“We’re here to make science fun and to open up young minds to the wonders of the scientific world. Kids were in awe on Friday as they learnt in a fun way the laws of air pressure, thanks to Dr Dude at Mad Science with his inventive experiments. Children enjoyed hands-on experiments such as how to place a giant needle inside a balloon without making it pop and how to make a toilet roll fly!”

The fun will continue all summer at Sandford Mill during the school holidays. Each session will be jam-packed with ‘edutainment’ from Mad Science in the Science Theatre, including carbon dioxide balloon racing, hands-on workshops to create the colours of the rainbow – plus awesome explosions – as well as exploring the science of flight with displays from raptors, and other exciting activities.

At Sandford Mill, there will also be the opportunity to explore the industrial heritage collection in the old Mill House. Tickets are just £5 per person and children under two years old can go for free. Sandford Mill is part of Chelmsford Museums and is located at Sandford Mill Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6NY.
