Key national role for Kent IT specialist

A Kent IT specialist has been given a national role in helping to ensure the next generation of students is properly qualified.

Rob Neil, managing director of Accordio Ltd, has been made chair-elect of the academic accreditation committee of BCS – The Chartered Institute for IT.

It means he will oversee a team of experts that visit universities and other higher education establishments to review computing courses. The aim is to make sure they are turning out students with the right skills for modern-day industry, commerce and government.

Rob’s own business specialises in helping the public sector make good use of technology to streamline processes and find more efficient ways of working, and his hands-on approach means he understands the demands on post-graduates.

“BCS is determined to ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need to make a success of their chosen careers,” he said. “Demands change, and BCS is well placed to make sure those changes are fed back to universities.”

Developing and maintaining high standards of qualifications for students who want to follow a career in computing or information technology is one of the responsibilities given to BCS under its Royal Charter.

Courses that are signed off by its academic accreditation committee are then able to use the highly regarded Chartered IT Professional (CITP) accreditation.

As a Nominated Body of the Engineering Council, BCS is also licensed to accredit courses at Chartered or Incorporated Engineer level.

“I am delighted to have been asked to chair the AAC once again, having first held the post ten years ago,” said Rob. “Technology education is vitally important to the UK and I’m pleased to be able to support BCS, my professional body, in its work to encourage professionalism across the IT industry.”

Accordio has been working recently with local authorities as far afield as Dartford, West Lancashire and Tower Hamlets, with councils increasingly looking for expert advice on making the most of technology.
