Are you a budding young writer, hungry for the opportunity to show what you can do… but stuck for inspiration while at home? Hampshire Library Service has joined up with local children’s author, Ali Sparkes, to launch Scribe Tribe Snacks – daily writing challenge videos for 9 to 14-year olds.

Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: “Scribe Tribe Snacks is the latest free, fun activity that Hampshire Libraries has launched in response to the Coronavirus outbreak when we know that most children are at home and looking for ways to express their creativity and learning.”

The Challenge:

Scribe Tribe Snacks will launch on Monday 4 May and run every day through to Friday 8 May inclusive. At 10.30am, each morning Ali Sparkes will post a video with a challenge that relates to an element of writing such as description, dialogue, characterisation, editing and powerful opening paragraphs. Children who want feedback on their work should submit an example by midday, then at 3.30pm, Ali Sparkes will be live on the Hampshire Library Service Facebook page sharing feedback.

At the end of the week, these activities should help the young writer to move on to the big challenge, to be named the Scribe Tribe Snacks Young Writer 2020.

Three finalists will win signed copies of Ali Sparkes’ story, Night Forever, and one winner will receive a free place on the actual Scribe Tribe (a week of writing workshops) which will take place at Winchester Discovery Centre later this year.

Councillor Woodward added: “Scribe Tribe Snacks is the perfect solution for children wanting a daily focus beyond their set school work and it’s something they can enjoy alongside their family members who would need to allow the access to the Facebook event.”

Hampshire Libraries is always open online with thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, newspapers and magazines – there’s always something to keep everyone entertained.”
