Herne Bay High is the standout choice!

Following the recent announcement that Margate Football club has extended its partnership with Herne Bay High to launch Girls Football Academy, it’s reassuring for potential students to know that the school itself is performing very well.

The Department for Education recently released the latest 16-18 School Performance tables in which Herne Bay High has performed very well in comparison to other schools across Kent.

Of the sixty Grammar and Non-Selective schools and from Medway, Swale, Canterbury, Ashford, Thanet, Dover and Folkestone, Herne Bay High achieved second place for A level and Academic progress; this means that Herne Bay High is one of only two schools where students make more progress than expected. 

Also, when comparing the Sixth Form against almost 100 others across the whole of Kent, Herne Bay High ranked sixth!

Margate Football Club Vice-Chairman Ricky Owen commented: 

“The recent 16-18 results are a great indicator of just how well Herne Bay High School is preforming.  At any school, the main focus is always to keep improving education standards and for that to be reflected in the school performance and that is exactly what these results show.  The school has improved tremendously in recent years and now out-performs many Grammar schools across the post 16 sector.”

“As a club we want to improve local opportunities for girls in football and their experience of it.  There is a drive to see more women playing the game, taking up coaching positions and having the confidence to move into the wider football industry, we want to be at the forefront of this drive!”

Owen added, “We believe we are perfectly positioned, through our partnership with Herne Bay High School, to break down barriers and offer girls the chance to develop their game whilst receiving a broad, first class education without compromise.”

“We want to raise aspirations and help young women progress, whether that’s university, employment or a football specific pathway – this is why we have started the Girls Academy.”

In keeping with this aspiration, Margate FC took another positive step by announcing that Harriet Woolston, current Women’s First Team midfielder, would take up the role of ambassador for the Girls Academy. 

Harriet chose the post 16 football academy route for herself during her education and knows first-hand what can be achieved as she went on to gain a first-class honours degree. 

Harriet is both passionate about women’s football and Margate FC, she is the perfect role model for aspiring players and young people in education.  There is little doubt that she will help raise the profile of the Girls Academy as the club push forward with recruitment for September 2019. 

This news follows the announcement last week that Cori Daniels has been appointed Girls Academy Coach, Cori expressed her pride at being involved: 

“As a 16-year-old I moved to London to play football for Arsenal full time.  At such a young age this was difficult and I had to grow up very quickly. I have always been passionate about helping other aspiring footballers across the county but have always said that I particularly wanted to do something for girls in and around Thanet to ensure that they have opportunities closer to home.  I am so happy that I have been selected for this opportunity and I can finally get the ball rolling in Margate” 

The first open evening for the Girls Academy is on Tuesday 26th February at 18:00hrs and takes place at Herne Bay High School.
