Herne Bay Community Singers

Herne Bay Community Singers first started several years ago as the Big Bay Community Choir.

Responding to adverts on Facebook and in local papers, like-minded people from Herne Bay and the surrounding communities came together to form a local choir and have the chance to make new friends. We have performed at two Herne Bay Christmas light switch on events, sung at Whitstable Castle and at the 1940’s Day on the Pier.

Previously the choir have performed for Age Concern enabling residents to reminiscence on songs of the past and enjoy a good old fashioned sing-a-long, and we also took part in the last Herne Bay Music festival. We enjoy taking the time to socialise as a choir, most recently holding a Karaoke evening at Mortimer’s restaurant which was great fun and raised money for charity.

The friendships forged between old and newly joining members of the choir looked to be in jeopardy in September when at the start of the new term our Musical Director had to unexpectedly resign from the choir. What this made us realise was how important the choir is to all its members and we were determined to find a way to keep us singing, performing and welcoming new members.

We formed a committee and advertised for a new Musical Director and set about sourcing a new venue to perform in.

We think fate and luck must have been on our side, as we very quickly had a venue at the Herne Bay Baptist Church in Herne Bay High Street, and recruited a new Musical Director Will Sherwood who lives locally in Herne Bay. Lastly, we rebranded ourselves as the Herne Bay Community Singers. Running a choir needs funding and we have been very fortunate to be sponsored by local business J&J Recruitments which helps subsidise the running costs and printing that are not covered by the membership fees.

As a result, we now have a growing and thriving choir. Our first rehearsal went so well with our new Musical Director that there was a spontaneous round of applause at the end.

We meet every Wednesday evening 7:00pm to 9:15pm at Herne Bay Baptist Church and new members are always welcome, with the first session free and no auditions required. If you want to sing and meet new friends come along and try us out. We have a Facebook page so anyone interested can find out a bit more about us:
