Staff at Havant Borough Council have celebrated National Inclusion Week with a special event.

The event was held to raise awareness of inclusion in the workplace, ensuring staff do not feel isolated at work – regardless of their age, disability, religion, sex, race or any other factor.

During the drop-in session, council employees were given the opportunity to discuss diversity and equality, get useful information and take part in a variety of activities.

Activities and resources on offer covered dementia, mental health, LGBTQ support, family care and much more. These were delivered by partners, community groups and local charities including the NHS, Mind and UNISON.

Funds were also raised for Macmillan through a special bake sale. Homemade cakes of all shapes and sizes were donated by staff and sold throughout the event, with £190.55 being raised.

Councillor Lulu Bowerman, Cabinet Lead for People and Communications, said: “The council places great emphasis on having a workplace where staff can flourish – so they can deliver the very best to residents.

“Staff wellbeing is a real priority for us as an employer. This event has provided a lot of useful information for staff and we would like to encourage other employers to follow suit.”

Emma Carlyle, organiser of the event, added: “The theme for this year’s National Inclusion Week is ‘everyday inclusion’. Often, it’s the small things that can make the biggest difference to how we feel about work.  Feeling included is important and has an impact on how we perform in our roles.”
