Get active and stay active with Thanet’s summer programme

Thanet District Council’s Sports Development service is launching two free new programmes for Thanet residents to help keep young people and their families active this summer.

The action-packed programme kicks off on Monday 24 July with Fit and Fed, a project which collaborates with national partner, Street Games UK, and the Zone Youth Club in Broadstairs to deliver free sport, movement, art and music sessions.

As well as the exciting activities on offer, the programme will also provide a free lunch to those who take part in a bid to educate young people and their families about the importance of leading a healthier lifestyle. It will specifically target those who receive free school meals.

Fit and Fed will provide an opportunity for participants to sign up to free first aid training, delivered by the British Red Cross. The Council’s Sports Development team members will also be on hand to discuss and encourage those to take part in sport by joining a local club.

Also on offer is the Summer Blast programme, aimed at children aged over 8 years old and their families. Delivered across Thanet’s parks and beaches, the activities include beach volleyball, mini park runs, family obstacles, and the inflatable sports pitch. There will also be information for residents on how to take advantage of the Viking Coastal Trail, which is the perfect activity to stay active with the whole family whilst exploring Thanet’s stunning coastline.

All activities are delivered by an experienced team of community activators.

Cllr Lin Fairbrass, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Services at Thanet District Council, said: “We are delighted to be working with partners to deliver a whole host of free activities across the summer. The huge influence that sport, physical activity and social cohesion can have on a young persons and families mental and physical well-being has been making headline news of late and we are committed to work with our local and national partners to communicate these messages to our residents.

“There is a huge variety on offer, and we hope families are inspired to get active together and take advantage of our stunning parks, beaches and open spaces.  We want Thanet to be a healthier and more active district and one that supports generations to come.”

In addition, the summer programme will roll out a #Thanetsummerblast17 hashtag campaign, which will include a giant selfie frame to capture the summer activities in action.  The ‘Sport matters incentive scheme’, which provides a FREE t-shirt or water bottle, will also be running for anyone who attends four sessions.

The summer programmes can be found at www.thanet.gov.uk/sport or by contacting the Sports Development service on 01843 577032 or email [email protected].
