Garden therapy at Lewes House

Lewes District Council has helped to create a therapeutic garden experience in the grounds of Lewes House.

The work was organised following the award of lottery funding to the Common Cause Co-operative to run gardening sessions for people who would benefit from outdoor exercise and contact with nature.

Garden-based activities can prove an excellent therapy for people as part of a recovery path following physical or mental health challenges, and people dealing with longer term conditions or as an antidote to simply spending too much time alone.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, said:

“This a fantastic initiative and I am delighted that the council has been able to help make it happen.

“The garden at Lewes House is perfect for this type of therapy and I understand doctors will be referring patients who they believe will benefit from visits.”

The sessions will be led by experienced gardeners with relevant knowledge in therapeutic gardening. Garden-related tasks and activities for all abilities will be identified and people can participate at their own pace.

Mears, the council’s housing repairs contractor, has redecorated a potting shed free of charge and this facility now includes a toilet, tea break facilities and somewhere to shelter from bad weather.
