Free open day for residents at Hoo Sports Centre

Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Medway Council is inviting older residents to a free open day at Hoo Sports Centre to try out a range of classes including AquaFit, senior aerobics and new age kurling.

Residents are encouraged to go along to Hoo Sports Centre for a comfortable workout in a safe, friendly environment with classes especially designed for older adults. Staff will be on hand during the day to guide visitors through activities such as such as AquaFit, tranquil swim sessions, senior aerobics, gym sessions, table tennis, boccia and new age kurling. Visitors can also have personalised fitness MOTs.

Gym staff are trained to conduct function fitness MOTs for older adults which will help identify personalised achievable fitness goals for each visitor. Staff will also be able to give advice and guidance to residents to help them achieve their goals.

All of Medway’s sports centres offer a range of senior sports activities tailored for older residents including badminton, short mat bowls, chairfit and aerobics.

Residents aged 60 and above can also swim for free at Medway Park, Strood Sports Centre, Hoo Sports Centre, Splashes Pool and The Strand with a free swimming card.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We have first class sporting facilities in Medway and we offer a range of classes and activities specifically designed for older adults. I would encourage residents to come along and experience what Hoo Sports Centre has to offer. We also have a number of activities which are suitable for residents who are living with dementia, including our tranquil swim sessions.”

The open day is being held during Dementia Action Week on Wednesday, 23 May, from 9.30am to 4pm, but all older residents are invited to take part. Every member of staff at Hoo Sports Centre has become a Dementia Friend and the centre is working towards becoming a Dementia Friendly Facility.
