Folkestone Channel Triathlon is a super success!
The second Channel Triathlon took to the water and roads of Folkestone on 8th September, coordinated by Joe Sullivan of Folkestone Channel Rotary Club and professionally managed by TriSpirit Events of Ashford. The response of the athletes was excellent and plans are already in hand for the next one in September 2020.
200 enthusiasts of all standards from beginners to fully experienced swam, cycled and ran. Based on the fantastic Harbour Arm, the Channel Tri showcases the major developments in the Harbour area, the Town and our amazing coastal and countryside scenery during the swim, cycle and run phases. The wind and sea conditions were fine and the athletes took to the water like ducks with the safety protection of canoeists from the Folkestone Rowing Club and Folkestone Rescue Service. Triathlons are essentially about challenging yourself and many swimmers were exhilarated swimming in these sea conditions knowing they were being safely watched over. The same drive and commitment was evident in the cycle and run phases and there were some powerful, personal achievements as athletes conquered the route and their tiredness.
Channel Rotary President Edwin Beddy and Coordinator Joe Sullivan were delighted with the outcome. “This has been a wonderful event and has built on the success of last year. The weather was good and the sea was comfortable despite the wind. We’ve had many excellent comments about the event, location and organisation including:
- “It was right up there with the very best Tri events”.
- “Superbly well organised and marshalled.”
- “Brilliant event. Great value for money”.
“We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped to make the Folkestone Channel Tri such a success including the athletes, our magnificent marshals, Channel Rotary members and friends, volunteers, the professional managers Tri Spirit Events and NE Timing and our sponsors including County, District and Town Councils, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Folkestone Harbour Company and all the local businesses who so generously supported us. Together with the sponsorship raised by the athletes for their own charities, we expect the Channel Tri has raised several thousand pounds with Channel Rotary particularly supporting the Pilgrims Hospices and the Shepway Sports Trust.”
