Dover District Council’s Community Housing Grants Scheme has awarded its first grant – with £3,000 awarded to the Betteshanger Social Welfare Scheme to carry out initial feasibility studies for community housing on a number of their sites.

DDC’s Community Housing Grants Scheme aims to enable funding of affordable homes, built through community-led projects. Community groups or organisations looking to deliver community-led housing schemes within the Dover District are welcome to apply for one of these grants. The grants are funded by the Central Government, with a grant pot of £100k available.

The award of the first grant follows a wide range of work from DDC, including free training sessions, promotional work, and a Community and Self-build Conference in the district.

Gary Cox, Betteshanger Social Welfare Scheme Trustee and Secretary said: “Receiving this funding from DDC’s Community Housing Grants Scheme, and working in partnership with their Community Housing Team, is an exciting and very important project for us to be involved with and will hopefully allow us to offer much needed affordable and suitable dwellings to members of our local community.”

Cllr Pauline Beresford, DDC Cabinet Member for Housing said: “We are very pleased to welcome the success of the Betteshanger Social Welfare Scheme in applying for this grant. The Community Housing Grants Scheme is an important project and we are delighted to see local groups making use of it in order to develop new projects in the area.”
