Final funding in place for Stubbington Bypass

Confirmation that Hampshire County Council’s detailed proposal for a scheme to build a bypass at Stubbington has passed the final funding hurdle and unlocked national funding has been announced by the Government.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said: “This confirmation that the business case has been approved and unlocked the funding needed from the Government to build this much needed bypass at Stubbington is great news.

“We made a commitment to the people of Gosport and Stubbington to improve traffic and travel in South Hampshire and have continued to press ahead with plans and pursue opportunities every step of the way to make this a reality. I’m grateful for the support of Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage who has worked hard to support our bid all through the process.”

The scheme for a bypass at Stubbington represents the final part of an investment of nearly £100 million into road and transport improvements in the area developed in partnership between the County Council and the Solent LEP in recent years, aimed at improving access to the Gosport Peninsula and the Enterprise Zone. In addition to the County Council’s earlier investment in the Eclipse Bus Rapid Transit route, this includes Newgate Lane, Peel Common roundabout and improvements to the A27

The bypass will provide a new 3.5 kilometre stretch of carriageway between the B3334 Titchfield Road and the B3334 Gosport Road, passing to the north and east of Stubbington, and is designed to reduce congestion and improve journey times for those living and working in the Fareham and Gosport area.

Councillor Humby continued: “It is a relief that we are now reaching the end of the process, and this announcement means we can press ahead with delivering this long-awaited and very important scheme.  As soon as we have a funding agreement in place which releases the funds to us, we can set to work appointing a contractor and can confirm a start date for the construction to begin.”

Hampshire County Council has developed the Stubbington bypass scheme to:

• Divert traffic around Stubbington to help reduce journey times and peak time congestion onto and off the Gosport peninsula
• Improve transport infrastructure to encourage investment and regeneration in the area especially at the Solent Enterprise Zone
• Improve the environment within Stubbington village with reduced traffic flows and improved access for pedestrians and cyclists
• Provide a new connection from the B3334 Titchfield Road to B3334 Gosport Road, with additional improvements to the existing sections at Titchfield Road at its northern end and Gosport Road at the southern end.
