Essex Forest Initiative takes root

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The first 40 trees have been planted at Great Notley Country Park – marking the first step in our plans to plant 375,000 over the next five years as part of the Essex Forest Initiative.

The initiative is one part of our Climate Change Action Plan and highlights our commitment to tackling climate change and reducing our carbon footprint, as well as promoting a cleaner, greener Essex.

In July, we also announced the launch of our Climate Change Action Commission – a cross-party group set-up to support environmental initiatives that reduce CO2, reduce waste, promote sustainable transport and proactively work to combat climate change.

There is already lots of activity happening across Essex as part of this, including work to replace all the streetlights across the county with low energy LED bulbs, recycling 90% of the materials used to improve Essex highways and significant investment in public transport to help reduce the number of cars on our county’s roads. The work of the Climate Change Commission will continue to build on this.

While this is just the start of the Essex Forest Initiative, we hope that over the next few months residents and community groups across the county will join us in planting many more trees and help us leave a legacy for future generations.
