East Kent Mencap stage Christmas Variety Show

A local learning disability charity took centre stage for their annual Christmas Variety Show. The all singing, all dancing extravaganza was put together by the group during their weekly drama sessions at East Kent Mencap’s Margate resource centre. The drama group, who all have a learning disability, have been preparing for the show all year long.

The show took place at St Peters Church Hall on Thursday 30th November and was enjoyed by many including the Mayor of Broadstairs, Cllr Peter Shaw as well as the Mayor of Ramsgate, Cllr Trevor Shonk. Cllr Peter Shaw kindly announced the winners of the raffle during the interval, with the top prize going to performer, Max Farmer.

The mixture of comedic sketches and musical medleys had the audience laughing, clapping and singing along for the afternoon. The group finished the show with Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ which got the crowd up on their feet and dancing with Christmas spirit.

Volunteer photographer, Brian Whitehead, said:

Have you ever been to something and come away thinking the world’s a better place? That’s just how I felt having the privilege of attending this event to take some snaps. The infectious enthusiasm and pleasure of the performers taking part was an absolute joy.’

The event raised a total of £408.50 through ticket sales, refreshments and a raffle. The upcycling group also exhibited their work on the day for donations which contributed toward the total raised. The funds will be allocated to the resource services at East Kent Mencap.
