For many people, a new year comes with renewed determination to improve their lifestyles including reducing their alcohol consumption.

In Hampshire, one in five adults consumes alcohol at a level which is putting their health at risk. Hampshire County Council is encouraging those who want monitor their drinking to download the ONEYOU Drink Free Days app.

Councillor Judith Grajewski, Executive Member for Public Health said: “Over the festive season it is easy to forget how much we’re actually drinking.  For those who want to take action to reduce their alcohol consumption, the ONEYOU app is easy to download and can help you track the amounts you are drinking, keeping you healthier in the New Year. Cutting back on alcohol, means you will feel a bit better every day and with the One You app it’s easier to start than you think.”

We know there are links between alcohol and increased risk of illnesses and injuries. ONEYOU has lots of ideas and tips to help those who want to manage their drinking so they can keep their health risks from alcohol to a low level. These include:

  • not drinking more than 14 units a week on a regular basis – this applies to men and women;
  • spreading your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week;
  • having several drink-free days each week to help you cut down.

The ONEYOU website is full of great information to support people make small changes that fit their lives, to help improve their health and wellbeing.   In addition, for Hampshire residents who want help to reduce their drinking there is a helpline available – simply call 0300 303 3539 to access extra support.
