Hampshire Residents can become a detective- Unravel the history and secrets of your house

This month’s archive is a wonderful photograph of the Post Office in Ovington from around 1905. Standing at the door of the Post Office is Aunt Tit, Aunt Teff, two unidentified boys and grandad James Messenger who is sitting down. Photographs offer a unique window into the lives of our ancestors, but also reveal how buildings have changed and the various roles they have held. Becoming your very own detective and unravelling the history and secrets of your house can be a rewarding and absorbing experience.

Hampshire Archives and Local Studies contains a vast amount of resources that could help you uncover the stories of your house.  Various maps, plans and sale catalogues may offer insights into the architectural history of your house, help you discover lost features or reveal what was there before your house was built. Census returns, electoral registers, title deeds and street directories may reveal who previously owned the property, how the property was used and the stories of those who occupied it.
