Deadline for registering your Whitstable Satellite 2018 projects for the art festival Whitstable Biennale 2018 is 17:00 this Friday 16th March.

Whitstable Satellite projects for the Whitstable Biennale 2018 can be organised by individual artists, groups or organisations. The Biennale does not have the resources to offer any direct funding for Satellite projects, but we do give support and advice as much and wherever possible. Please see below for suggestions about where to go for funding.

The opportunity to make new work, or display existing work, in a new and unique context is one of the many benefits of participation. Showing alongside the Biennale, registered artists will have the support of an engaged and ready made audience, marketing, promotion, exposure, and opportunities to expand their creative networks.

About the Satellite Membership Scheme

Participating in the Whitstable Biennale 2018 Satellite programme is free to everyone, and all registered projects will be featured in the programme listings.

In addition to this, artists are invited to become Satellite Members. Membership costs £30 for a two year period and the benefits include:

• A prominent presence in the Satellite publication comprising of a whole page feature with an image, description of your work and link to your website.
• Feature of your work on the Satellite website.
• Artist surgeries with the Satellite Curator will be held on two dates at which Satellite Members are invited to discuss their projects.
• The opportunity to sign up for curatorial visits during the festival, with curators from national organisations or institutions.
• Invitation to the Whitstable Biennale soft launch event.
• The opportunity to attend/participate in a Satellite Members event during the festival.
• Satellite signage to accompany your work during the festival.
• Ongoing invitations to attend talks, events, trips and workshops with free or discounted entry throughout the two year membership.

Venues

Whitstable is a unique town with a strong independent identity.  It was named England’s most independent town in 2010 by the think tank NEF (New Economics Foundation). Benefitting from fast rail links to London, the town attracts many visitors throughout the year, particularly during the summer.

There are very few gallery venues available, therefore Satellite artists must be flexible and imaginative when thinking about where and how to show their work.

Past Satellite artists have shown work in a wide range of spaces, such as beach huts, shops, abandoned buildings, shop windows, the beach, train station platforms, boats, caravans/caravan parks, portable DVD players, churches, galleries, the street, alley ways, Whitstable Castle, bowling alleys, pubs, front rooms, gardens, sheds, banners, posters, the sea, cafes, radio airways……just to name a few.

Artist surgeries

Artist surgeries are an informal opportunity to discuss any project ideas with the Satellite Curator. They aim to offer guidance and support towards the realisation of your project.

Visiting Whitstable

It is strongly encouraged that you visit Whitstable if you are thinking of participating in the Satellite and aren’t familiar with the town. This may prompt ideas for your project as well as help to firm up venues or locations. Whitstable is just off the M2. It is about an hour’s drive from London (from the Blackwall Tunnel). Trains from London Victoria take around 1 hour and 20 minutes direct, and the Southeastern high-speed rail travels to Kent from St. Pancras Int’l or Stratford Int’l, with an easy change at Faversham.

Public Liability

If you are thinking about putting on an event we strongly suggest you have your own public liability. Air members of Artists Newsletter are now automatically covered for £5million public liability. A yearlong subscription to their magazine and online services starts from £38 for artists or £16 for students. www.a-n.co.uk

Licensing

If you are organising a public performance or screening you may need to apply for a Temporary Events Licence (TENS). Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions before approaching Canterbury City Council.
