Craig says “UK must leave EU on 31st October this year” at Public Meeting in Sandwich

Last Friday, 200 residents in Sandwich filled the Main Hall of the Guildhall to hear a speech on Brexit from their local MP, Craig Mackinlay.

In his speech, entitled “Brexit – How we got to this point and where do we go from here?”, the South Thanet MP and Exiting the EU Select Committee member explained why he voted against Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement on the three occasions it was considered – and rejected – by the House of Commons.

Craig told the audience that he was supporting Boris Johnson MP for Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister and that he has received a personal assurance that, under Boris’ leadership, the UK will leave the EU on 31st October 2019, deal or no deal.

After his speech the South Thanet MP took a series of questions from residents who raised the issues surrounding exporting to the EU post-Brexit and the Irish border.

“The Government’s failure to keep its promise to leave the EU on 29th March this year has led to the decimation of what little trust there ever was in MPs.

“That is why it was important to hold this Public Meeting and give a wide-ranging and detailed presentation to residents in Sandwich on how we got to this point and where we go from here; on the challenges and opportunities Brexit presents.

“Too many in Government have treated Brexit as a problem to be managed, rather than an opportunity to be grasped. The result has been a negotiating strategy that has been wholly inadequate, inept even.

“It is my profound hope and belief that, with fresh leadership in the coming weeks, we will benefit from a more positive and resolute approach to Brexit by looking more seriously at agreeing a Canada-style free trade agreement with our friends and neighbours in the EU, and, most importantly, ensuring that the UK leaves the EU on 31st October 2019: no ifs, no buts, no equivocation.

“The message from Sandwich residents is loud and clear: ‘We accept the outcome of the referendum and just want the Government to get on with leaving’. I second that.”
