Craig hosts visit to Parliament by Sixth Form Students from Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School

Craig Mackinlay MP has hosted a visit to the Houses of Parliament by around 30 Year 12 and Year 13 Politics students from Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School in Ramsgate.

The Sixth Form students’ visit included a Story of Parliament tour which started with a 15-minute film at Parliament’s Education Centre followed by a tour of the Palace of Westminster.

The group then met with their South Thanet Member of Parliament, Craig Mackinlay MP, who answered wide-ranging questions from the students, including on Brexit and Manston.

Finally they observed from the public gallery a House of Commons debate on proxy voting.

Craig Mackinlay MP commented:

“I had a very enjoyable discussion with the Politics’ students at Chatham and Clarendon, principally on Brexit, and the viability of re-opening Manston as an airport.

“The students displayed an excellent grasp of the issues and clearly have an outstanding teacher in Mr Walton.”

Mr Walton, Head of Politics at Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School, said:

“The visit was inspiring. The students were enthralled by watching Parliament at work, from the pomp of the Speaker’s Procession to the cut and thrust of debate in the Commons chamber. Such a stimulating visit will encourage many of them to work harder to achieve their goals.

“The support of Craig Mackinlay, the local MP, is invaluable. Giving up so much of his time to debate with students and explain the processes of the current confusion surrounding the Brexit process only stimulated them further and can only encourage them to get more involved in helping their communities through political activism of some sort.”
