County Council congratulates students on A-level, technical and vocational results

Thousands of post-16 students are celebrating their achievement after publication of A-level, vocational and technical results.

Provisional results issued on 15th August 2019 indicate that the hard work of the county’s students has brought them success with the average A-level grade achieved moving up to a B minus from a C plus in 2018. Point scores (translating to UCAS points) across all types of qualification have also improved to an average of:

– 35.5 at A-level (up from 33.4 in 2018);

– 29.9 for technical qualifications (compared with 28.2 the previous year);

– and 39.6 for vocational qualifications (against 27.8 last year).

Welcoming the results, Councillor Roz Chadd, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Education and Skills, said: “Well done to the thousands of young people who received their results today, whether they sat A-Levels, technical or vocational qualifications. Their achievements are a reflection of the high standards that these young people have clearly set themselves, as well as the commitment of the excellent teaching and support staff in our colleges. We should also remember the parents and carers who have supported behind the scenes to help our students reach their goals.”

Students sitting this year’s A-levels were the first to study for new-style exams from Year 12, with 20 new subjects tested for the first time. The qualification was redesigned to focus more on examinations in place of coursework and modules, following concerns from universities that school leavers were insufficiently prepared for the demands of higher education.

Councillor Chadd added: “These results demonstrate the high quality of post-16 education and training that we have throughout Hampshire, whether students are studying academic, technical or vocational subjects. I am pleased that all young people in Hampshire have opportunities to pursue studies that suit their interests and abilities, in preparation for a rewarding career, higher education or high-level training.

“However, I do understand that not everybody receiving results today will have the results they’d hoped for, but I would urge them not to despair. There are good alternative routes into many careers that can lead to gaining qualifications in a different way – for example, apprenticeships.
