A Lewes District Council refuse driver has been hailed a ‘charity champion’ having raised £32,000 for good causes over the last decade.

Kevin Miller has completed numerous fundraising challenges including three marathons, two ultramarathons, a trek to Everest Base Camp, and scaling 24 peaks of the Lake District within 24 hours.

And there is no slowdown to the swift pace of his endeavours, as he prepares for a 100km run from London to Brighton in May in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, with his son James.

Over the years, Kevin has raised money for an array of charities including Crohn’s and Colitis UK, Cystic Fibrosis Trust and RISE, a Sussex charity that supports people affected by domestic abuse.

“I raise money for charities that are close to my heart,” said the father-of-two, who lives in Ringmer. “I lost two brothers to cystic fibrosis by the time I was 14. I always think there is always someone worse off than me who needs help.”

Kevin’s colleagues at the waste and recycling centre in Robinson Road, Newhaven, are always supportive of his charity challenges.

He said: “My wonderful work colleagues have contributed £4,000 out of the £32,000 – which is amazing from a relatively small workforce of around 80 people. They always put their hands in their pockets whenever I ask for sponsorship.”

Staff at the depot have even helped Kevin host Macmillan coffee mornings, raising hundreds of pounds for charity.

Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, said: “At the council, we are all very proud of Kevin and his dedication to helping good causes. He is a true charity champion.”
