Eastbourne Borough Council report on climate emergency

Eastbourne Borough Council has taken rapid action to change reporting procedures following the council’s declaration of a climate emergency.

Every report considered by councillors is assessed against a number of standing items, such as equalities and legal implications.

The council has now added a mandatory field on the report template called ‘Environmental Impact Analysis’ that will require the author to assess the report content against the council’s sustainability policy and the 2030 carbon neutral target.

Councillor Jonathan Dow, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

“Our declaration of a climate emergency must permeate every facet of the council’s operation and decision making at committee is fundamental to that ambition.

“Guidance will be developed and refined to ensure we are putting all the relevant environment elements of a report under the microscope. This is a good start, but we have much more to do.”

In July, Eastbourne Borough Council committed to working in close partnership with local groups and stakeholders to deliver a carbon neutral town by 2030.
