KCC launches consultation into share pedestrian/cycle route

Kent County Council is running a consultation for a shared pedestrian/cycleway in Folkestone.

It would run from the Harvey Grammar School to the seafront and include a new toucan crossing on Cheriton Road outside Morrisons.

The plans would see the cycle route linking to the existing route at the junction with Cornwallis Avenue, continuing through to the Leas.

KCC cabinet member for highways Matthew Balfour said: “The plans utilises an underused cycle/pedestrian tunnel under the railway line which has no links to the current cycle network.

“With this work, the route would be direct, which we hope will encourage more people to choose sustainable modes of travel, such as walking and cycling.

“Increasing the number of cycle journeys has been shown reduce congestion, improve air quality, improve resident’s health and bring investment to an area.”

The scheme is part of a wider plan to create cycle routes in and around the centre of Folkestone, aiming to link up with schools, train stations and the seafront.

The Shepway District Cycling Plan is a five year plan that supports cycle network improvements.

If the decision is taken to proceed, KCC’s intention is to start work in February.

Depending on weather conditions, the build should take approximately six to eight weeks to complete.
